Artist Statement
Shortly after the pandemic began, and we were in a largely stay at home situation, I started to take the short walk from my apartment to Tompkins Square Park, just to get some air. The first time I did this a very bold squirrel approached me. As I eat a lot of almonds, I thought I wonder if I can take some almonds and feed the squirrels? This became an almost daily ritual, and soon the squirrels became trusting of me, and quite tame. I began to name them and write little stories about them that I posted on Facebook. As they were so at ease with me, I could get very close to them with my Iphone to take photos, sometimes as close as a couple of inches away. I noticed that often while they were eating almonds or walnuts, they seemed to be smiling. Hence this show, my first show of photographs. Accompanying the squirrel photos are some other non-squirrel photos I also took on my phone.
David Cale is a performance artist, playwright, songwriter and actor. His most recent work was his solo musical memoir We’re Only Alive for A Short Amount of Time at The Public Theater, NYC for which he wrote the book, lyrics, co-composed the music with Matthew Dean Marsh, and starred (2019 Jeff Award, 2020 Outer Critics Circle Award, 2020 Lucille Lortel Award Nomination, 2020 Drama Desk Award Nomination, 2020 Obie Award). Other recent works include the solo play Harry Clarke, starring Billy Crudup (2018 Lucille Lortel Award) and the
online recorded monologue, The Actor, starring Marin Ireland. Cale composed the songs for 600 Highwaymen’s Employee of the Year. His songs have been sung by a wide array of artists including Debbie Harry, Elvis Costello, John Kelly, Grace McLean, Jo Lampert, Sylver Wallace, Carol Lipnik, Ronald Peet, Niya Norwood, Ryan J. Haddad, Barrie Lobo McLain, Violet Newman, Syd Straw, Ana Gasteyer and Jimmy Scott, and he regularly sings them himself with musical collaborator, Marsh, at Pangea, NYC. Cale has performed in plays and musicals on and off-Broadway, most recently on stage in Stew and Heidi Rodewald’s The Total Bent at The Public; on TV in Russian Doll; and on film in Paul Harrill’s Light From Light. He is currently collaborating with Dael Orlandersmith and Matthew Dean Marsh on You Don’t Know the Lonely One. His newest solo play, Sandra, will premiere at the Vineyard Theatre, NYC, Spring 2022.
