Jacob Quinn: Graffiti I Made Up

Graffiti I Made Up
May 14 – June 29

With “Graffiti I Made Up,” Jacob Quinn presents detailed, photorealistic renderings of the city’s architecture embellished with forms that spring from the artist’s imagination. Scribbled shapes make subtle appearances on the walls and in the shadows of empty urban spaces. The series seeks to capture the sensation of vague familiarity we feel when we encounter shapes that echo half-remembered crayon drawings and cherished toys from childhood. Memories embedded in harmonious curves and angles materialize in our peripheral vision as we walk from place to place through the city’s streets. Rendered in colorful gouache and acrylic, these delicate paintings reward sustained attention and close reading.

Jacob Quinn is a photographer, painter, and illustrator based in Manhattan. He studied English Literature at Yale and Surface Imaging at Philadelphia University (formerly the Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science; currently a part of Jefferson University). In the course of his graduate studies in Surface Imaging, he gained new insight into image reproduction techniques and a profound appreciation for pattern design. In his work, he draws upon nature and the cross-cultural history of design and ornament in order to discover and refine the essential, elemental motifs and forms that make up the visual world.
