Steven Hammel is a New York City artist whose paintings are a joyous and whimsical tribute to American pop and consumer culture and his own rural up bringing. Colorful landscapes and still life’s depict water towers, interstate highways, salad bars, grazing cows, mounds of jello and myriad items from bygone mail order catalogs. Influenced by traditional textbook illustration and WPA murals, Hammel adds his own quirky flair to everyday things and places, such as a cob of corn flying over a farmers field or a platter of tempting desserts placed in the middle of a forest. His sincere and cheery portrayals elevate the mundane to new heights of appreciation and evoke a sense of comfort, nostalgia and coziness.

In addition to his paintings, Hammel frequently collaborates with performers and has provided dynamic sets and backdrops for Dina Martina, Cole Escola, Julie Klausner and many others. According to the New York Times his theatrical contributions are infused with the
“Glittery echoes of lost Hollywood grandeur”. He is also an in-demand decorative painter, and his own home, a showcase for his folksy design sense has been profiled in New York Magazine.
