The Sun & Moon Share The Same Bed

August 18th – October 21st, 2023

Inspired by the Sénégalese proverb, “When the sun comes out at night, you will see a camel come out of a chicken house,” this exhibit explores the imbalanced aspects of harmony — one sought within and beyond the self.

Where do the outcasts go? Who accepts the nuanced parts of those brave enough to unmask?
Can room be made in the world for our collective oddities? These are the ruminations contended within The Sun & Moon Share the Same Bed.

WESHHH. presents a series of film portraits that confront unconventional ideas and lean into chaos. The thirteen photographs of The Sun & Moon Share the Same Bed showcase the duality of our inner and outer selves. Themes of presentation versus performance and acceptability versus acceptance are explored in juxtaposed compositions of models in mirrored images.

ASSANE SY’s choice to shoot these film portraits in medium format captures the disposition of both the models and the natural landscape surrounding them — these external environments reflecting, shaping, and amplifying the internal biome.

When space is made to explore the complexities of the self, the tensions that come with building community with others can be confronted. Here, The Sun & Moon Share the Same Bed honors that delicate balance of individuality in community.

This show was curated by WESHHH., in collaboration with the Art for Human Sake festival and wild project.
