Ben Williams and Syndee Winters Join Forces to Create Butterfly Black, a new exciting R&B duo that’s bursting with infectious energy for our post-pandemic times.
Butterfly Black draws upon the legacy of iconic male-female soul duos, such as Ike & Tina Turner, Ashford & Simpson, René & Angela, Peaches & Herb, and Yarborough & Peoples. “I don’t see a lot of those duos existing nowadays,” Williams says. “Having a true duo group, I think will be something special to present to people now.” This year, Butterfly Black released its first infectious single, “I Just Want To Love You” a summery mid-tempo jam that recalls Leon Sylvers’ legendary production and songwriting work at SOLAR Records in the early-’80s. Later this year, Butterfly Black releases its five-song debut EP.
Butterfly Black’s strength lies not only in the couple’s intoxicating musical chemistry that is evident both in the studio and onstage; it comes from their divergent individual artistic pasts. Williams is among the upper echelon of his contemporaries in the jazz scene. After winning the 2009 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition, he has released a handful of critical-acclaimed solo albums and recorded and/or performed with numerous heavyweights such as Pat Metheny, David Sanborn, Jose James, Robert Glasper, George Benson, Kamasi Washington, Dianne Reeves, among others.

In a post-pandemic era of festivals, stadium shows, and high ticket prices, we felt it was important that small venues weren’t left out of the live entertainment conversation. Someone has to give the stage back to the community. There’s a certain quality that intimate shows offer, and if we’re being honest, it’s nice when you can actually see the artist—if you wanted to look at a screen the whole time you could’ve stayed home and done that. Now, we may not have the bells and whistles that the larger venues have, but this is New York City. We have an amazing artist community, and that community has some talented ass friends, some of which you may know, and some of which you definitely want to find out about.
Sound Stage @ wild project is a new series in New York City presenting eight intimate performances between July & August. The inaugural 2022 lineup features comedians, poets and music artists from around the country, and we are ecstatic to have Brooklyn-based artist Cyrus Aaron as our first curator-in-residence.
