Ayn Rand’s controversial, possibly abusive, affair with her much younger acolyte, Nathaniel Branden, may have been the catalyst for the modern self-help movement. Nathaniel leads a self-esteem retreat in 1979, and as he tries to help his audience unlock the key to happiness, his own repressed traumatic memories of Ayn Rand come to the surface.
