Notes From the Underground | Amber Martin

Last week, the multitalented Amber Martin wrapped up a four-week run of her latest show, “Amber Alert,” in front of a sold-out house at the Wild Project in the East Village. Martin seamlessly floated between multiple costumes, personae and skits, never once leaving the stage, and carrying the calm of a seasoned performer through comedic routines, duets and classic vocal covers. Martin’s first such transformation was from “Daydra,” a walking trailer-trash disaster complete with raspy smoker’s voice and greasy mullet, into the very vision of a solo diva, in a floor-length gown and heels, launching into a pitch-perfect rendition of Dionne Warwick’s first hit, “Don’t Make Me Over.” Guest performers included the Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears, the hysterical Bridget Everett and the gender-bending guitarist NathAnn Carerra, with whom Martin performed a very curious duet.
